of previous Nutcracker productions. His theatrical sets were a breakthrough in ballet,
fantastically lifelike and stunning in their expression. He was able to combine
the wonderful fairy-tale beauty of the ballet with the tragic overtones of
Tchaikovsky’s music, portraying clearly the ambiguity of Hoffman’s tale.
